Los Angeles (57-48) at Detroit (55-49), 7:05 p.m. EDT

The Los Angeles Angels had their string of stellar pitching efforts snapped in their series opener against the Detroit Tigers, but it didn’t stop them from earning yet another victory.

The Angels will try to build on one of their best offensive performances of the season while spoiling Rick Porcello’s attempt to win a fifth consecutive start Friday night.

Going into this series at Comerica Park, Los Angeles (58-48) had posted a 1.61 ERA in seven games, a stretch capped by Ervin Santana’s no-hitter at Cleveland on Wednesday.

The Angels nearly blew a five-run lead Thursday, allowing Detroit (55-50) to score four times in the fourth inning, but pulled away with five runs in the seventh and went on to win 12-7.

Los Angeles scored only seven runs against the Indians, but had 17 hits and posted its second-highest run total of the season Thursday in winning for the seventh time in nine games.

Mark Trumbo finished a single shy of the cycle and drove in a career-high five runs.

“Power and production are what I need to do.

Betting On BSkyB Share Price Is Murdochs Empire On The Slide

Tags: Murdochs, Murdochs Empire

Fortuitously for the Murdochs the news has been overwhelmed this weekend with the massacre in Norway and the premature death of Amy Winehouse. For the past few weeks the phonehacking scandal at The News Of The World has dominated red tops and broad sheets alike, the lightweights interested in the impact of the unravelling debacle on the likes of Rebekah Wade and Andy Coulson and the heavyweights dissecting the impact on the police, the government and the future of BSkyB. This last issue is one that is of course intersting the city boys who are watching the share price with great interest.

Royal Ascot hero Pisco Sour secured further Pattern-race honours under a fine ride by Jimmy Fortune in the Prix Eugene Adam at Maisons-Laffitte.

Hughie Morrison’s Derby ninth improved on his Epsom performance to land the Group Three Tercentenary Stakes at the Royal meeting, and was tackling Group Two company over a straight mile and a quarter in France.

Fortune was allowed a largely uncontested lead from an early stage, being happy to wind up the pace from the halfway stage.

Fellow British raider Colombian, fourth in the French Derby for John Gosden, was settled not far off the pace by William Buick and got caught in a pocket for a while.

Once the gap did come he was unable to quicken up sufficiently as Pisco Sour kept up the gallop to take the victory.

Glaswegian finished strongly to grab second, with Colombian third.

“We’re very thrilled and we’re celebrating seriously with the local fizz,” said a delighted Morrison.

“Over a straight mile and a quarter I think you need an exceptional ride and not a bad horse either.

Las Vegas Sportsbooks Spared With NFL Labor Settlement Complete

Tags: Las Vegas, Nfl

Las Vegas sportsbook executives have been dreading the possibility that the upcoming NFL season could be cut short since the day the owners locked out the players. Today, those executives can rest easy knowing that only one game of the new season will be lost to the lockout. In Nevada, the casinos have experienced a sharp drop-off in customers since the economic recession. Fortunately over the past couple of years, the sports books remained popular for NFL gamblers, even in the face of the recession. With the threat of a lockout disrupting this season, many Vegas sportsbook owners and gamblers alike were bracing for the worst. “I really didn’t know what I was going to do,” said Paul Barrow, on his way in to a Las Vegas sportsbook on Monday afternoon.

The much anticipated ‘Duel of the Downs’ will see a 4 horse race in the Sussex Stakes tomorrow, with all eyes on the duellers, Frankel and Canford Cliffs.

Both are hotly tipped and have huge money riding on them to win the race with Frankel just edging into the position of favourite.

However, Canford Cliffs’ Jockey Richard Hughes this week went on record to say that the horse had ‘never let me down’. The trainer of the reigning champion, Richard Hannon, is aiming to make the horse the 1st horse in the Races’ history to regain to the title.

Hannon said he felt ‘Course experience’ would be crucial in Canford Cliffs’ victory and pointed to Frankel’s weaker performances in some recent races although he has still gone on to win.

However, despite massive odds, maybe outsiders Dick Turpin and Rio De La Plata may have something to say about the outcome of the race. Although both runni
