Matchups are on the board at the sportsbook page for the Australian Open. The men’s side should be all about Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer while the women’s side appears more wide open.

Nadal and Federer Anyone other than Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer winning the Australian Open would be a surprise.  Nadal is trying to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time although it would not be a true Grand Slam.  Nadal lost last year’s Australian Open but then won the next three Grand Slam events.  His main competition is expected to come from Federer who is the defending Australian Open champ.  Federer has won 16 Grand Slam titles which is a record.  He could become just the second man in history to win five or more Australian Open titles.  Either Federer or Nadal has won 21 of the last 23 major titles with Federer winning 12 and Nadal winning 9.  World #3 Novak Djokovic would seem to be at least a little bit of a threat as he did win this tournament three years ago.  Also in the mix could be Andy Murray and Robin Soderling. If things hold to form the two would meet in the quarterfinals.

Clijsters or Henin? It would seem that the two favorites on the women’s side at the offshore sportsbook would be Kim Clijsters or Justine Henin.  Clijsters is the best player in the field but she never does well in Australia.  The women’s side is not as clear cut as the men’s side as a number of other players could win.  World #1 Caroline Wozniacki and #2 Vera Zvonareva could end up the winner although neither is a sure thing to even reach the final.  The hometown favorite is Samantha Stosur and she definitely has the talent to get her first big win in front of her fans. Keep in mind that Serena Williams is not playing due to injury so anything is possible on the women’s side of the draw.
