Phil Mickelson loses in Tucson and Las Vegas

Different strokes for different folks.

Both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were dismissed in the Accenture World Match Play tourney in Tucson, AZ. An angry Woods went home to sulk. Mickelson reportedly had some fun in Las Vegas.

A person who sat at Mickelson’s table tweeted the experience, saying that Phil dropped around $500,000 and smiled about it.

Here is the shortened internet version.

“I was in Las Vegas last night playing blackjack and who sits down at my table but none other than Phil the Thrill. What a great guy, he said hello, shook everyone’s hand, a real crowd pleaser.

He did well too, the first six or seven hands he was up a couple of hundred grand, just like that, right out of the gate.

The next six or seven he was up and down, won a few, lost a few, but smiled the whole time and acknowledged the crowd gathering around behind our table.

Then on the 17th hand, he drew a jack and a 5, the dealer had a four. Phil hits! He gets a queen and busts. The dealer busted too. I couldn’t believe that move from such and experienced blackjack player. That fast, all of his winnings were gone.

He pulls out a marker and drops down a couple hundred grand on the 18th hand. He gets two kings, the dealer has a five. That’s a sure thing. Unbelievably, Phil decides to go for it.

He splits the kings and drops down another couple hundred. Two cards later Phil has a 16 and a 17, the dealer flips his face card for 15 and draws a 3. 18, Phil lost it all, at least half a million total.

But what a great guy. He stood up, hugged the dealer and the pit boss, then told all the other players and people watching how wonderfully that dealer dealt those cards.

He hung around and gave autographs to everyone. The last I saw he was asking to be comped for the buffet.”

Meanwhile, back in Tucson, the world’s new No. 1 golfer Martin Kaymer of Germany plays England’s Luke Donald in the 36-hole final. The Golf Channel has the early action at 6 a.m. PT with NBC taking over at 11 a.m. PT
