Wolves v Liverpool Preview

Wolverhampton Wanderers face Liverpool in the first televised Premier League action of the weekend, and this one is a hugely significant clash with both sides desperate for points near the foot of the table.
While it may be a little fanciful to call this one a relegation battle, Liverpool are currently just 14/1 to go down this season in what would be one of the most sensational football stories in years, and should they lose here, they’ll be just 2 points ahead of Wolves. The visitors are, however, the marginal favourites to win the match at 13/10, with Wolves 21/10 and the draw an 11/5 chance.
Wolves certainly come into this one in very decent form having won 1-0 at Anfield as recently as 29th December before beating Chelsea at Molineux a week later, and Tuesday’s 5-0 FA Cup win against a very decent Doncaster side is further evidence of what a tough place this is to come to at the moment. That 2/1 about the Wolves win looks very solid indeed, and if you want that extra bit of insurance, backing them at 6/5 in the Draw No Bet market also appeals.
Recent history is certainly on Wolves’ side with no win on this ground for Liverpool since 1979 though the last 3 meetings have all ended in draws, the last 2 being 1-1, and a repeat of that outcome is an attractive-looking 11/2 shot in this match. Wolves’ top scorer Steven Fletcher scored the first goal of that midweek romp against Doncaster and the Scot certainly offers plenty of appeal to repeat the trick here at 7/1 in the First Goalscorer market.
Fletcher is also the subject of Blue Square’s Player Specials market where some of the more attractive bets about him are 7/4 for a goal at any time during the match, 4/1 to score Wolves’ first goal of the game and 25/1 to score in both halves. For Liverpool, it’s Fernando Torres who is the subject of our Player Specials, and the 3/1 about him to be booked immediately stands out as the Spaniard continues to cut a frustrated figure and has been booked in his last two. Torres is 11/10 to score at any time and 33/1 for a hat-trick.
With Steven Gerrard still banned for this one and the Reds struggling desperately on their travels this term – only Wolves have taken less than their pathetic 5 points on the road this season – and it remains impossible to back them with any confidence. Draw / Wolves looks very decent indeed at 6/1 on the Half time / Full time market and backing Wolves to win to nil also looks well worth a dabble at 4/1.
