Tattersalls Gold Cup Betting So You Think long odds on favourite at the Curragh
With Workforce bypassing the Tattersalls Gold Cup and shying away from a glamorous clash with the exciting So You Think, the race has somewhat lost its intrigue, and with only five runners heading to the Curragh for the Group One renewal, it will now lack that certain pizazz it would’ve had if the Derby winner was to line up.
Following So You Think’s arrival at Aidan O’Brien’s Ballydoyle stable from Australia with a glowing reputation, he showed his potential when dotting up in a Group Three earlier in the month.
A five-time Group One winner Down Under, it is unsurprising that he is as short as 2/7 with Paddy Power and this looks on paper to be another stepping stone to tougher assignments later on in the season. Sent off 2/13 favourite for that Curragh success on May 1, it was mere formality as he careered away from his rivals in the final two furlongs to win by an impressive 10 lengths.
Sunday’s opposition is slightly tougher with Famous Name likely to give him the most problems. A multiple winner for Dermot Weld, he has shown his ability winning a plethora of Listed and Group Three contests. However, Paddy Power’s 7/2 could be a tad short as he has never fared well when making the huge step up to Group One class. Last of six in the Irish Champion Stakes last season, the son of Dansili will need So You Think to flop if he is to take this contest. Like the favourite he had no problem brushing aside an average field on his last outing when winning by seven lengths at 1/6 favourite, but this is a whole new task and he should struggle against the Aussie superstar.
Campanologist is the only other contender who could upset the apple cart and Goldolphin’s son of Kingmambo is 10/1 with Paddy Power. A habitual globetrotter last year for connections, he provided his best performance when winning a Group Two in Meydan. Since that win last March he finished fourth in an Arc trial before being outclassed in the Melbourne Cup. His reappearance was far from impressive as he could only manage fourth of six in the Jockey Club Stakes behind Dandino. Nevertheless, the drop back to ten furlongs, a trip which he has won at before in a Group Three, could be a major plus point and he could be worth putting in the forecast bet with So You Think.
Mid Mon Lady (80/1) and Windsor Palace (100/1) have no feasible hope of improving enough to trouble So You Think although the latter could be used by O’Brien as a pacemaker for Ballydoyle’s first string.
The 2/7 hardly makes an appeal, but for all money it appears that So You Think has to turn up and perform to his normal standard to take this event quite comfortably, so it may be worth putting Campanologist in the forecast for a smidgen of value.
