Novak Djokovic v Jo Wilfried Tsonga Odds Tsonga could cause a semi final upset

Tags: Novak Djokovic, Upset, Wilfried Tsonga

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga willattempt to upset the odds again when he takes on Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon semi-finals on Friday. Tsonga shocked Roger Federer in the last round and can be backed at 7/4 to do so again with Paddy Power, while Djokovic is the firm favourite towin the matchat 4/7 on.

Number twelve seed Tsonga produced a truly stunning performance to overcome six time Wimbledon champion Federer. He came from two sets down to win through 3-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, and in doing to became the first man to beat Federer from 2-0 down in a Grand Slam match. Furthermore, the result has raised questions over whether Federer can ever win another Grand Slam.

Tsonga will just be happy to claim a first Grand Slam title and he is a man in form after reaching the Queen’s final on grass earlier this month, where he lost to Andy Murray. His streaky style of play make him a very dangerous proposition and world number two Novak Djokovic will have to be on his guard.

Djokovic struggled through his last eight match against qualifier and tournament surprise package Bernard Tomic as he looked far from his best at times when winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. It is the Serb’s third semi-final appearance at SW19 and he will be wary after being the victim of an upset last year when he lost to eventual runner up Tomas Berdych.

He may have gone on a 41 match unbeaten run, winning five tournaments in the process, and only lost one match all year but Tsonga has the edge in their head-to-head meetings. Tsonga leads 5-2 in head-to-head meetings, all on hard courts, and goes into his first Wimbledon semi-final brimming with confidence.

He is a Grand Slam finalist having lost to Djokovic in the 2008 Australian Open, although he did gain revenge in 2010 when he won a five set thriller at the same event. Indeed, none of their Grand Slam meetings have been decided in straight sets and the Tsonga 3-1 win looks tempting at odds of 11/2, as does the 3-2 at 6/1.

Tsonga is 3/10 on to win at least one set and he is priced 11/8 to take the first, with Djokovic8/15 on with PaddyPower.com. Interestingly there have been five 6-1 sets in their last five meetings and the odds of the first set being won by a 6-1 scoreline on Fridayare hugely tempting – Tsonga is 40/1 to win 6-1, while Djokovic is 19/1.

The pair haven’t met since Tsonga won the Australian Open meeting last year and Djokovic has obviously kicked on since then. But Tsonga is playing some of the best tennis of his life on the grass and we fancy the Frenchman could upset the odds once again and book a place in the final with either Rafael Nadal or Andy Murray.
