Memory tries again at Newmarket

Tags: Newmarket

Memory faces 10 rivals as she goes on a retrieval mission in Friday’s Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket on Friday.

On her last trip to Headquarters, Richard Hannon’s filly threw away any chance she might have had in the 1000 Guineas on the Rowley Mile as she stood still when the stalls opened, but she has since run a creditable seventh in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

John Gosden’s Joviality finished one place ahead of Memory at Ascot and takes her chance along with stablemate Maqaasid, who finished third in the 1000 Guineas before disappointing in France.

Clive Brittain’s Masaya is the other three-year-old in the line-up but the older division looks strong with Godolphin’s recent Group Three winner Antara at the head of the list. Rod Collet’s French raider Sahpresa will be among the favourites after sealing back-to-back victories in the Sun Chariot last October and landing a Longchamp Group Three on her seasonal bow.

Sir Henry Cecil drops Timepiece back to a mile after her recent Listed win over further at Warwick, while South African handler Mike de Kock pitches River Jetez into the mix as she has her first run since finishing second in the Singapore Airlines International Cup in May.

Jean-Claude Rouget’s Lily Of The Valley, winner of the Prix de l’Opera last term, takes her chance while David Simcock fields both First City and I’m A Dreamer.

Simcock is hoping I’m A Dreamer can redeem herself following a disappointing effort when unplaced at Royal Ascot.

He said: “We were very disappointed with her run at Ascot and I’d like to think there is better to come from her. It appears to be a very competitive Falmouth but I’m looking forward to running her. Nothing came to light after Ascot and we are hoping she can show what she shows us at home on Friday.”

In contrast, First City put up a career best to be third in the Windsor Forest but Simcock is not banking on a repeat of that form.

“Her good third in the Windsor Forest entitles her to a place at this level. It might be a bit hot for her but she has been in good form. Her long-term target is a valuable fillies’ race in Turkey in September,” he added on his website, www.davidsimcock.co.uk.
